FINISHING TOUCHES FOR REFACING
HARDWAREPlacement of hardware is based on preference. There are no rules. However, it is common to place knobs and handles in the center of drawer fronts. Hardware is often placed in the upper corner opposite the hinges on lower doors, and on the lower corner opposite the hinges on upper doors.
Be sure to measure to the door you are working on and not to the doors nearby. Remember that door adjustments are made during the last step. Once the doors are adjusted the hardware will align perfectly. You may need longer machine screws for drawers than you do for doors because you are going through the drawer box too. |

Always use a block of wood to drill into when drilling for hardware. This will prevent what is referred to as blowout. This is where splinters of wood are forced out by the drill bit pushing through. Using a wood backstop keeps resistance on the bit until after it passes through the surface eliminating blowout.
Do not overtighten the screws on hardware. If you are using a power drill be sure to use a clutch to control the torque. Not doing so could result in damage to the door or hardware. Repeat this process until all of the hardware is applied to the cabinets. You are now ready for the finishing touches.

FINISHING TOUCHESYou're now ready for the finishing touches.
Door bumpers are a nice touch. Not only do they protect the doors and cabinets but they deaden the sound made when they are closed too hard. Bumpers should be placed on the outside corners on the opposite side of the hinges on doors. Bumpers should be placed in the center of both the left and right side on the drawer fronts. |
Next, you will adjust the hinges to line up the doors. Whenever possible use 3-way adjustable hinges. They allow you to adjust the doors up and down, left and right, and in and out. It is best to use a hand screwdriver or a power drill with variable speed action as a quarter turn of an adjustment screw can make a huge difference. It may take you some time to tweak out the doors. Take your time and it will turn out looking great. Be patient. This step can take several adjustments to get just right.
